OUR ANIMALS

The Matanuska-Susitna-Borough Animal Shelter has many dogs and cats looking for loving, forever homes. Most of the time we have other animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, or horses. Come by the shelter to visit any available animal. You may also visit our adoptable animals page to see what we have available. This information is updated every 2 hours.

Please note that if you are using a mobile device, downloading the free Petharbor app will be the best way to view available or stray animals. You can also go to their webpage at:  http://petharbor.com.

We frequently showcase animals on our Facebook page, as well as make announcements regarding current events. Please visit us and like our page to stay in touch with Mat-Su Animal Shelter happenings.

Great News - We now have a modified opening!

Updated 04-03-21:

The shelter is open for normal operations, but adoptions are still by appointment only. Appointments for other services can be made and all appointments are given priority.

  • Our cat and dog kennels will stay closed to the public for visits to “browse”, but we offer appointments for visitations and adoptions.  Please visit www.petharbor.com for a listing of our currently available and stray animals.

  • While we can sometimes accommodate walk-in adoptions, please be aware that we may not be able to accommodate everyone, and previously made appointments will be given priority. The layout of our building makes it difficult to assist multiple people at one time while maintaining social distancing.

  • If your pet was brought to the shelter as a stray and you would like to claim them, you may either walk in or shedule an appointment. Making an appointment will cut down on any wait time. Bring proof of ownership (vet records, photos, adoption paperwork, etc) as well as proof of current rabies vaccine if they have it.

Contact 746-5500 to make an appointment or for general questions.

Contact 761-7501 for enforcement.

Contact animal.care@matsugov.us for email inquiries.

HIGHLY DESIRABLE ADOPTABLE ANIMAL POLICY

The shelter sometimes has animals that have triggered multiple phone calls from the public prior to becoming available for adoption.  In these cases, the shelter will post the animals for adoption the night before they are available on PetHarbor.com.  The following day, interested adopters will have between 11:00a.m. to 11:30a.m. to enter their names in a drawing.  The drawing will take place at 11:30a.m.  The first name selected will have the first option to visit with the animal, then adopt if desired.  The next name selected will have the same option to visit and adopt if desired.  Names will be drawn up until the point the animal(s) are all adopted.  In many circumstances, interested adopters elect not to adopt the desired animals.  In these cases, the next name selected has the option of adopting if desired.
